The Villager, The Village Sun and the Daily News

Lincoln Anderson, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of The Village Sun, wrote an article that was published in The Village Sun on August 14, 2020 on the closing of the Daily News newsroom. Entitled “Extra! … is what Daily News considers its newsroom during pandemic” the article used the following drawings that Joseph Papin had done of the Daily News.

Prior to starting The Village Sun in 2019, Lincoln Anderson was the editor of The Villager for twenty years (https://thevillagesun.com/about-us). The posthumous connections are interesting ones. Joseph Papin worked with The Villager from 1958-1961; Lincoln Anderson wrote an at least a couple of articles in The Villager about Bill Honan, a former editor of The Villager and a good friend of Joe Papin. Joe Papin’s drawing of The Villager is below:

Lincoln Anderson’s article on August 14, 2020 in The Village Sun begins:

“What would Pete Hamill say?

“Just a week after the legendary New York City tabloid newsman died at age 85, the Daily News on Wed., Aug. 12, announced it was closing its newsroom.

“With the news, the paper immediately shuttered its offices in New York Plaza, down by the Battery in the Financial District. Staffers, though, will have until the end of October to clear out their personal belongings. …

“Giving a glimpse of the iconic tabloid’s legendary newsroom back in its heyday, [these are drawings by] Daily News artist Joseph Papin.”

Brings back many fond memories of the gifted staff in the News’ good old days.

    1. Thanks Jerry, it does for us too. It was wonderful to visit our father at the Daily News building.

I have always loved seeing the Daily News building drawn by Mr. Papin. He certainly captured the look and feel of the iconic facade.

    1. Thank you Monica. It is such an iconic building!

Yes, it has been awhile but l remember that Mike Clendenin was the name of the City Editor, not Max. Sal Gerage may have been the Suburban Editor, not Sports.

    1. Thanks so much for catching that error! I’ve edited the caption and changed it to Mike Clendenin. I wish I knew the date of the drawing and if it was when Sal had moved from sports to Suburban Editor.

  6. I worked for World Telegram and Sun throughout high school on the trucks in Brooklyn. When I graduated a distant cousin ran the garage at the Daily News and I went to shape up and he got me on the presses right away. That an experience that was loud as hell but it was union and paid great. When I got a recording contract with Kapp records I was on Clay Cole show at WPIX in the Daily News Building. I went to see my cousin Patty and told him I was a rock star. Recently I’ve worked with editors on cycling articles for the Daily News.

    1. That’s great John, thanks for posting! The sound of the presses were indeed a remarkable thing. It’s sad that the News no longer has their magnificent building.
