Joseph Papin – Memorial Day remembrance and drawings of Vietnam

The following drawing by Joseph Papin was printed in the May 29, 1977 edition of the Daily News for Memorial Day, illustrating a story by Walter Kaner, We Mourn in Peace, Thanks to Fallen Soldiers.

I believe that the following drawings by Joseph Papin may have been done as sketches for David Halberstam’s article, Return to Vietnam, published in the December 1967 edition of Harper’s Magazine. While several of his drawings did appear in the article, they were lighter in tone; the following ones were not among them. To the best of my knowledge, these did not appear in print.

My goodness – your father had the gift of evoking such deep emotional responses from his work, reflecting truth from a high ethical moral code – I am moved to tears!

    1. Thank you Brenda, I have the same response to these drawings.
