The following is a Joseph Papin drawing that appeared in The Villager on August 20, 1959:

“DeSapio Press Conference – Carmine G. DeSapio (left) at a press conference in the Fifth Avenue Hotel this week with members of The Villager’s editorial staff. For story please turn to page three. Drawing especially for The Villager by Joseph Papin.” Clockwise from left, Carmine DeSapio, J. Owen Grundy, Bill Honan, Jason Marks.

The text to the left of the drawing reads:
“The Villager – The following is a report of an exclusive two-hour press conference by Democratic District Leader Carmine G. DeSapio with the editorial staff of The Villager. Mr. DeSapio answered questions posed by Villager Editor William H. Honan; Associate Editor Jason Marks, who has been covering Mr. DeSapio’s opponents, the Village Independent Democrats; and Assistant Editor J. Owen Grundy, who has been covering Mr. DeSapio’s Tamawa Club.”
JASON MARKS
Jason Marks, Ph.D., Bernard M. Baruch College of the City University of New York, Emeritus Professor, Journalist, Author, Looking for Canterbury and Around the World in 72 Days.

Jason Marks wrote a column for The Villager called “Scoopy Mewses” which was named for The Villager’s cat, Scoopy. Jason and his wife Edith were good friends of my parents, and I used to visit The Villager and play with their cat.

J. OWEN GRUNDY
I know less about Mr. Grundy. According to his Wikipedia article, he left The Villager in 1959.

The next blog post will be about Bill Honan.
